Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy
Isaac Newton
Andrew Motte (1846)
Isaac Newton's Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687) is the founding work of classical mechanics and one of the most consequential books in the history of science. Proceeding from the Definitions and the three Axioms or Laws of Motion, Book I develops the mathematics of motion under central forces and the geometry of conic-section orbits; Book II treats the motion of bodies in resisting media; and Book III, 'The System of the World,' applies the whole apparatus to the cosmos, deriving universal gravitation and the motions of the planets, moon, tides, and comets. The rendering is Andrew Motte's of 1729, the first and long-standard English translation.
