Herodotus

G. C. Macaulay (1890)

Composed in Greek in the mid-5th century BCE by Herodotus of Halicarnassus, often called the "father of history." The work narrates the Persian Wars between Greece and the Persian Empire while digressing broadly into geography, ethnography, and myth. It is the earliest surviving work of large-scale historical inquiry in the Western tradition and set the pattern for narrative history thereafter.
