Paradise Lost
John Milton's Paradise Lost (first published in ten books in 1667, revised into twelve in 1674) is the greatest epic poem in the English language, written in blank verse by the blind poet late in life after the collapse of the English Republic he had served. Retelling the fall of the rebel angels and the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve, it sets out, in Milton's own words, to 'justify the ways of God to men,' fusing classical epic form with Protestant theology and a profound meditation on free will, obedience, and loss.
