Cicero's Laelius de Amicitia (On Friendship, 44 BC) is a philosophical dialogue in which the aged statesman Gaius Laelius, shortly after the death of his great friend Scipio Aemilianus, discourses on the nature of friendship. Written near the end of Cicero's life, it became one of the most beloved classical treatments of the subject, grounding true friendship in virtue and shared moral character. The translation is Evelyn S. Shuckburgh's.
