Oedipus the King

Sophocles's greatest surviving tragedy, first performed around 429 BCE during a plague in Athens. King Oedipus, investigating the crime that has brought plague upon Thebes, gradually discovers that he himself — unknowingly — murdered his father and married his mother. Aristotle cited it in the Poetics as the model tragic plot, and it remains the archetype of tragedy in Western literature.
