Euripides's Iphigenia in Tauris (c. 414 BC) is a tragicomic romance of recognition and escape. Iphigenia, secretly rescued by Artemis from sacrifice at Aulis, serves as priestess in the barbarian land of the Taurians, where she must consecrate strangers for death—until the victims prove to be her own brother Orestes and his friend Pylades. Their mutual recognition and daring flight make it one of the most admired of Greek 'escape' plays. The translation is Gilbert Murray's.
