Areopagitica
Published in 1644 during the English Civil War, John Milton's Areopagitica is a pamphlet arguing against a Parliamentary licensing order that required prior government approval for printed works. Modeled on a classical Athenian oration, it is the earliest and most eloquent sustained defense of freedom of the press in English. The work influenced every subsequent Anglo-American argument for free speech and a free press.
