The Third Ennead is the third of the six groups into which Porphyry arranged the fifty-four treatises of Plotinus (c. 204–270 AD), the founder of Neoplatonism. Its nine tractates turn to the cosmos and the providential order of the world—fate and free will, providence and the problem of evil, the guardian spirit, love, time and eternity, and the way Nature brings forth the visible universe out of contemplation. The translation is Stephen MacKenna's, the classic English rendering of the Enneads.
