Lysistrata

Aristophanes

First performed in 411 BCE, during the late Peloponnesian War. The women of Greece, led by the Athenian Lysistrata, refuse sex with their husbands until they negotiate peace. The play is Aristophanes's most famous anti-war comedy and one of the earliest surviving works in Western literature to place female characters at the center of a political action.
