Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound dramatizes the punishment of the Titan Prometheus, chained to a remote Scythian crag for defying Zeus by stealing fire and giving the arts of civilization to mortal men. Once part of a trilogy now largely lost, the surviving play is a stark meditation on tyranny and resistance, and on the suffering of a divine benefactor who will not bend to a newly enthroned and jealous power. The translation is E.D.A. Morshead's verse rendering, matching the other Aeschylus plays in this collection.
