The Interpretation of Dreams

Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams (1899, here in A. A. Brill's 1913 translation) is the founding work of psychoanalysis. Freud argues that dreams are not meaningless but the disguised fulfilment of repressed wishes, encoded by a 'dream-work' of condensation, displacement, and symbolism that must be decoded through free association. Analyzing his own and his patients' dreams, he opens the theory of the unconscious that would transform psychology, psychiatry, and modern culture.
