Charles Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a historical novel set in London and Paris in the years before and during the French Revolution. Through the entwined fates of Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, it dramatizes the terror, resurrection, and moral reckoning of the age, closing on one of the most famous acts of self-sacrifice in English literature. Serialized in Dickens's weekly All the Year Round, it has become one of the best-selling novels ever written.
