The first play of Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy, performed at the City Dionysia in Athens in 458 BCE. It dramatizes the return of King Agamemnon from the Trojan War and his murder by his wife Clytemnestra, setting in motion the chain of bloodshed the trilogy must resolve. Widely regarded as one of the supreme achievements of Greek tragedy for its dense poetry and its treatment of justice, fate, and inherited guilt.
