Sophocles's The Women of Trachis (the Trachiniae, date uncertain) dramatizes the death of Heracles through the unwitting act of his wife Deianira. Longing to regain her husband's love, she sends him a robe smeared with what she believes is a charm but is in fact a deadly poison; when it destroys him in agony, she takes her own life. The play is a study of love, jealousy, and catastrophic misunderstanding. The translation is Lewis Campbell's.
