Galileo's Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences (1638), written during his house arrest and given here in the Crew–de Salvio translation of 1914, is the founding work of modern physics and the science of materials. Cast as a four-day conversation among three interlocutors, it establishes the strength of materials as a mathematical science and, most momentously, the laws of motion—uniform and naturally accelerated motion, and the parabolic path of projectiles. By subjecting motion to geometry and experiment, Galileo laid the foundations on which Newton would build.
