Peace

Performed at the City Dionysia in 421 BCE, a few days before the Peace of Nicias briefly ended the first phase of the Peloponnesian War. An Athenian farmer flies to heaven on a giant dung-beetle to rescue the goddess Peace from a pit where the war-god has imprisoned her. It is one of the earliest Western works to frame peace not as the mere absence of war but as a positive, almost religious good.
