John Allen (1813)

John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, first published in 1536 and vastly expanded across five editions through 1559, is the systematic foundation of Reformed Protestant theology. Organized in four books — on knowledge of God the Creator, of God the Redeemer, of the manner of receiving Christ's grace, and of the church and sacraments — it articulates doctrines of total depravity, unconditional election, and sola scriptura that defined Calvinism and shaped the Protestant churches of Geneva, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Puritan New England. This edition is John Allen's nineteenth-century English rendering, long a standard in American Presbyterianism.
