Shakespeare's The Tempest (c. 1611) is among the last plays he wrote alone and, by long tradition, his farewell to the stage. On a remote enchanted island the exiled magician Prospero, aided by the spirit Ariel and served by the 'savage' Caliban, raises a storm to bring his usurping enemies within his power—only to renounce his magic and choose forgiveness. A late romance of tempest and reconciliation, it meditates on art, power, colonialism, and the passing of illusions.
