Plato's Theaetetus (c. 369 BC) is his most searching inquiry into the nature of knowledge. In a dialogue framed by the impending trial of Socrates, the young mathematician Theaetetus proposes and, under Socratic questioning, sees refuted three definitions of knowledge—that it is perception, that it is true belief, and that it is true belief with an account (logos). Rich in the imagery of the midwife, the wax tablet, and the aviary, it is a founding text of epistemology. The translation is Benjamin Jowett's.
