Plato's Protagoras (c. 380 BC) stages a lively debate between Socrates and the famous sophist Protagoras on whether virtue can be taught and whether the virtues are one or many. It contains Protagoras's celebrated 'Great Speech' myth on the origins of human society and a discussion of a poem of Simonides, ending with the paradox that Socrates, who doubts virtue can be taught, treats it as knowledge, while Protagoras, who teaches it, resists. The translation is Benjamin Jowett's.
