An early Platonic dialogue, probably written in the 380s BCE, in which Socrates and the young Thessalian aristocrat Meno search for a definition of virtue. Meno poses the famous paradox of inquiry — how can one search for what one does not know? — and Socrates answers with the doctrine of recollection, demonstrated by leading an uneducated slave boy through a geometry proof. The dialogue is the first Western treatment of the problem of learning and marks the introduction of Plato's claim that knowledge is innate and draws the enduring distinction between true opinion and knowledge.
