One of Plato's early Socratic dialogues, dramatically set in 399 BCE outside the court where Socrates awaits the indictment that will lead to his death. Meeting the self-assured young seer Euthyphro—who is prosecuting his own father for manslaughter—Socrates presses him to define piety, and each definition collapses under examination. The dialogue crystallizes the enduring “Euthyphro dilemma”: whether the holy is holy because the gods love it, or the gods love it because it is holy—a question still central to ethics and the philosophy of religion.
