Pascal's 'Of the Geometrical Spirit' and its companion 'The Art of Persuasion' (De l'esprit géométrique et de l'art de persuader, written c. 1657–58) form a short but seminal essay on method, reflecting on the geometrical ideal of demonstration. Pascal analyzes how the geometric method defines its terms and proves its propositions from evident principles, why certain primitive notions (space, time, number) cannot and need not be defined, and how genuine persuasion combines proof addressed to the understanding with an appeal to the will.
