Common Sense
Notebook
Published anonymously in January 1776, Thomas Paine's Common Sense was the incendiary pamphlet that turned American colonial opinion toward independence. In plain, forceful prose it assails hereditary monarchy and the British constitution, argues that a continent cannot forever be governed by an island, and lays out the practical case for an American republic. Selling hundreds of thousands of copies, it became one of the most influential political pamphlets ever written.
