It follows the whaling voyage of the Pequod under the command of Captain Ahab, whose monomaniacal pursuit of the white whale that once took his leg drives ship and crew toward destruction. Long neglected, the book was rediscovered in the early twentieth century and is now widely considered the greatest American novel.
