The Prince

Notebook

Written by Niccolò Machiavelli in 1513 after his fall from office in Florence and dedicated (unsuccessfully) to Lorenzo de' Medici as a bid for reappointment. It offers candid advice on how a new prince may seize and hold political power, stripped of the moralizing conventions of earlier mirrors-for-princes. More than any other single book, it marks the emergence of a distinctly modern, realist political thought.
