Horace's Epistles (published c. 20 and 11 BCE) are two books of verse letters in hexameter, the reflective maturing of his satiric manner into moral philosophy. The first book treats the conduct of life—independence, self-knowledge, and the pursuit of tranquility ('nil admirari'); the second turns to literary history and criticism. They are translated into verse by John Conington (1869).
