Michael Faraday, a self-taught bookbinder's apprentice who became one of history's greatest experimentalists, gathered his electrical investigations in Experimental Researches in Electricity, whose first series appeared in 1831. The volume records his discovery of electromagnetic induction — the principle behind the electric generator and transformer — along with the laws of electrolysis and his conception of lines of force. Written in plain, meticulous prose almost wholly free of mathematics, it shows the experimental method itself at work and laid the empirical foundation for Maxwell's field theory.
