Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment (1866) is a psychological novel set in the slums of St. Petersburg, following the impoverished ex-student Raskolnikov, who murders a pawnbroker to test his theory that extraordinary men stand above conventional morality — and is then consumed by guilt and dread. Serialized in The Russian Messenger, it fuses a gripping crime story with a searching inquiry into conscience, suffering, and redemption. It is a founding work of the psychological novel and a cornerstone of Russian literature. This is Constance Garnett's 1914 translation.
