Published in two parts (1605 and 1615) by the Spanish soldier-turned-writer Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote is widely regarded as the first modern novel and the founding masterpiece of Western prose fiction. Its tale of an aging gentleman who, his wits addled by chivalric romances, sets out as a knight-errant with the peasant Sancho Panza both satirizes the dying ideals of chivalry and probes the boundary between illusion and reality. John Ormsby's 1885 translation renders the comic and humane sweep of a work that shaped the novel form for every writer who followed.
