Performed at the City Dionysia in 411 BCE, the same year as Lysistrata. The women of Athens, celebrating the festival of the Thesmophoria, plot to punish Euripides for portraying them unflatteringly in his tragedies; Euripides sends an elderly male relative in disguise to plead his case. The play is one of the richest surviving sources for Athenian gender attitudes and for the reception of tragedy in its own time.
