Performed at the City Dionysia in 414 BCE, The Birds is the longest surviving play of Old Comedy. Two Athenians, fed up with city life, persuade the birds to build a city in the sky — Cloudcuckooland — in order to starve the gods into submission. The play is often read as a satirical fantasy about Athenian political ambition at the height of the ill-fated Sicilian expedition.
